Ken Merton, born in Carlton (1941), talks about being put into foster care as a baby; being transferred to Pleasant Creek Special School at four; staying at the orphanage and school for 11 years; life in the orphanage; his hearing being damaged and going to Melbourne for treatment; difficulties at school with reading and writing; his siblings and mother; being transferred to Sandhurst Boys Training Centre in Bendigo; absconding and living with his mother; returning to Bendigo and living on his own from 18; memories of staff at the orphanage; currently doing voluntary work for Child Family Services; teaching himself to read; taking up cycling and winning races; moving to Melbourne; living in boarding houses and then a caravan park for 12 years; working a variety of jobs but not being able to settle; enjoying rock and roll dancing; relationships with women; reading his file; attending the Apology in Canberra; CLAN; Open Place; wanting to travel overseas.
