Henk Drost was born in Bulongan, Borneo, 1930, his father was an accountant of the garrison, Dutch East Indies Army; speaks of his father; moves to Batavia, Tarakan, Djakarta and Kotaraya; visits to Netherlands and seeing family, impressions of Holland, WWII in the Netherlands; school and life in Dutch East Indies. Tells of the Japanese invasion of the Pacific, father becomes a POW and goes down with the Junyo Maru, 1944; Japanese and Korean guards on the camps; life in Japanese occupied Indonesia in a family POW camp; Japanese brothel; family separation, survival in the camp; punishments; rats and other various camp experiences; Red Cross parcels; Indonesian Freedom Fighters; post war Indonesia. The family travels back to the Netherlands on the Boissevain; displaced persons, adapting to life in post war Holland; memories about home in Indonesia. Meets his future wife, lack of employment and opportunities; deciding to migrate to Australia against family advice. Arrives in Sydney, moving on to Melbourne where they had friends; finding employment, becoming a station master, using his language skills; his wife supporting him to study accountancy; working at Ansett as a linguist; starting a family and speaking English with their children; Dutch traditions and keeping in touch with other Dutch migrants; starting a business; retirement; wife's death in 2000.
