Armand Leeuwendal, born in Soerabaja, Indonesia, 1922 (then the Netherlands East Indies), speaks of his family in Holland and Indonesia; school and lifestyle of Dutch colonists; family traditions. War is declared against Japan in the Netherlands East Indies, December 1941; enlists in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army, training, death of his mother, family home taken over by Japanese; talks of his time in Indonesia during the Japanese occupation WWII; becoming a POW; interned in the Tjimahi camp with over 10,000 people; treatment by the Japanese; sent to Japan as a POW to work in coal mine; life in Japanese prisoner camp, Fukuoka 7B; the Japanese surrender. Armand speaks of memories of the camp life directly after the liberation; the atomic bomb; American support; getting issued with an American uniform and other essentials; POW camp; cigarettes, food parcels, returning to Indonesia; taking over from Australian troops in Balikpapan; post-war he volunteers to go to Celebes [Sulawesi], serves about three years on Celebes; Dutch troops and Ambonese soldiers; reuniting families and repatriation back to Holland. Recollects first impressions after arrival in the Netherlands; studies at Technical School in Haarlem; meets Catherina, his future wife; migrates to Australia in September 1955; being a Dutch Migrant, housing, jobs in Brisbane, brings Kitty out, their first home and life together; having a family; Dutch friends and heritage; buying their own house, his wife gets Alzheimers disease; going into a retirement village; reflects on early life and bringing up his sons.
