Jocka Burns picked up his swag in Yarraville, Vic. in 1926 and went on the track for 12 years. He worked as a rouseabout in the shearing sheds, as an itinerant fruit picker and at any casual work that was offered. During this time he spent time in both Melbourne and Sydney on the dole. He was arrested on many occasions for riding on the railways without a ticket and for trespassing on railway property. He had an early interest in politics and joined the Young Communist League. He is the leading character in Frank H. Huelin's book, Keep moving. Burns speaks about his experiences on the track and in the cities; his political activities; organising the unemployed in Mildura, Vic.; his many arrests, whilst attempting to use the railways in a non-paying capacity; brushes with the New Guard in Sydney; the Unemployed Single Men's Group in Melbourne; the techniques he used to survive the Depression years.
