Messel speaks of his childhood in Levine Siding, Manitoba; taking two degree courses simultaneously at Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario, 1946); his attitude towards discipline; post graduate studies; coming to Australia (1951) and taking up a position at the University of Adelaide; heading the school of physics at Sydney University; starting the Science Foundation for Physics in 1952; writing integrated science textbooks; his opinion on the compulsory teaching of science in schools.
