Anne Kirker and G. W. Bot's collaboration brings together two poems and twelve prints which counterpoise a typographical arrangement of words in visual form (concrete poetry) with the artist's language of "glyphs" (refined and distilled compositions drawn from nature) on the facing page. The book, with its beaten bark cover and warm earth toned paper, describes the paddocks of Australia where years of drought, flood and fire have weathered all elements of the landscape, often to the barest trace of existence. A meditation on the drama and trauma of this severe landscape, where glyphs are thrown together in stark reality, but with the will to survive, underlies the text and image. The black and red ink indicate the disfigurement and transformative effects of fire on landscape, and the living forms affected, skeletal, that still stand. The second poem, "Containment," which grew out of the landscape that surrounds the artist, refers to Morandi and his still lives where simple unremarkable objects nudge one another in a rapport that speaks to our humanity. Combined together, the glyphs and the metrics of the poems suggest the rhythmic boundaries of a concrete and self-contained landscape still surviving within a book like a paddock.
