Fry talks about coming to Canberra in 1952 as a post graduate research scholar; life in Canberra at the time and the difficulties of finding accommodation for married scholars. He then describes early problems with his research due to a lack of supervision and direction; improvements in 2nd year as he came under direction of Laurie Fitzhardinge and in 3rd year supervised by Bob Gollan. Fry then provides some information about his thesis topic which was a study of the labour force in Australian cities during 1880s. He then describes the atmosphere and personalities of ANU at the time; opening of University House in Feb. 1954 by Duke of Edinburgh and being awarded the Coronation Medal soon after. Fry then provides details about the administation of University House; its first master, A.D. Trendall; social life enjoyed by scholars; formation of ANU Students' Association in 1952 and the operations of the University Council.
Fry then looks at ANU during the Cold War, 1952-56, and the pressures of the Cold War on its staff and scholars, in particular the situation involving Peter Worsley. He then discusses his own involvement with the local communists in Canberra and his view of himself as an Australian nationalist.
