A set of 12 full page gouache paintings showing traditional judicial tortures employed to extract confessions from criminals such as face slapping and also punishments used in 19th century China. They included the most extreme forms of capital punishment and slicing (ling chi). Each image is bordered by a bright blue silk ribbon. The images are simpler and less sophisticated than those in other similar albums on criminal punishments in China during that time held by the National Library.
