- Summary:
-
A bound collection of catalogues issued separately by a small number of individual brokers: Hall & Webster, Buxton & Metcalfe, Daniel Hazard, Thomas Southey & Son, Henry P. Hughes, S.B. Edenborough & Co, Charles Jacomb & Son. The majority of wool bales are Australian, particularly from: Port Philip, Sydney, Adelaide, Swan River, Moreton Bay, Hobart, Pike's Creek, Victoria, and Van Dieman's Land, as well as New Zealand, Cape of Good Hope, Algoa Bay, Buenos Aires and (to a lesser extent) Odessa, Seville, Leghorn and Peru. Sales were held six days a week and contained up to 400 lots, the wool evidently remaining in the dock warehouses (of which addresses are given) for viewing and collection. The auction lot descriptions include the type of wool (in grease, part greasy, scoured, hogget, locks, combing, clothing, black, clippings, handwashed, full skins, lambs’, damaged, part fleeces), the mark (usually an initial or typographic symbol), the number of bales and the lot estimate (or starting price), the importing ship’s name and the wool’s origin. The catalogues are uniformly sized, on white and pale blue very light paper stock. The various printers include: Metcalfe, A.M. Straker & Co., W.J. Adams, Jones & Causton, Charles Skipper & East and Titterton. Many catalogues have a contemporary ink stamp at the head ‘With H.P. Hughes’ compliments.’
