Fitzhardinge talks about his background as an historian; employment at National Library of Australia in 1934 as a research clerk and his publications on the history of the Church of St John the Baptist at Reid, A.C.T. and on Sir Littleton Groom. He then describes his work during WWII; involvement in the organisation of history courses for diplomatic cadets at Canberra University College and his view of Australian history and its study at the time. Fitzhardinge then discusses his work at ANU; his relationship with students and staff; Hancock's influence; launch of ADB (Australian Dictionary of Biography) and his involvement with Basser Library. He then describes the societies that he has been connected with and his views on the writing of Australian history since WWII.
