John Martyn Young was born in 1931 at Wanganui (NZ) to Australian child star and male impersonator 'Maie Vine' and New Zealander, Charles Shannon Young (1887-1951) but lived most of his life in Australia. The scrapbook is said to have been compiled by his mother May Curtis Martyn (1893-1982) and covers aspects of Young's personal life, including his 1954 marriage to Sidonie Goossens (1932-2004, the eldest daughter of Sir Eugene Goossens) as well as his performance career. Young and Goossens met during a 1951 performance of 'Elektra' in which Sidonie 'Donie' Goossens played harp with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and John was a bass baritone soloist. They worked together with the National Opera and Conservatorium Opera companies.
