- Biography/History:
-
Arthur Orton, alias Thomas Castro, a butcher from Wagga Wagga, responded to advertisements seeking Sir Roger Tichborne (b. 1829), heir to extensive family estates in England. "The Claimant," as he was known, was accepted by Lady Tichborne, Roger's mother, but attempts to establish his identity in a civil case, Tichborne v. Lushington, 1871-72, collapsed. He was arrested on charges of perjury and detained in Newgate prison before being prosecuted (and convicted) in a 188 day criminal case listed as Regina v. Castro, 1873-74.
