MS 9334 comprises correspondence, photographs, notes, research material (primarily photocopies) and manuscript drafts relating to the researching and writing of Cochrane's book Simpson and the donkey: the making of a legend (1992). The research material gathered by Cochrane documents the life and legend of stretcher-bearer John Simpson Kirkpatrick, who died in the Gallipoli campaign of World War I. Among the correspondents represented in the collection are Ken Inglis, Bill Gammage, Jim Henderson, Humphrey McQueen, John Hirst, John Herouvim, Peter Stanley, Barry York, Alan McLean, Craig Munro, Catherine Snowden, Ian Duffield, Chris Pugsley, Ann Richter, Michael Sharkey and Paul Fussell (4 boxes).
The Acc10.042 instalment comprises correspondence, research notes, edited chapters, copies of news clippings and awards material relating to Cochrane's book Colonial ambition: foundations of Australian democracy (2006); notes and writing for the TV documentary "The making of modern Australia"; notes, speeches and reviews related to the production of the National Library of Australia's centenary volume Remarkable occurrences (2001); correspondence and notes regarding the 2009 New South Wales Premier's History Awards (8 boxes).
The Acc18.138 instalment comprises additional papers relating to two of Cochrane's books published in 2018 - 'Best we forget: the war for white Australia 1914-1918' and 'The making of Martin Sparrow' and includes annotated drafts and correspondence with editors, historians and the media (2 boxes, 1 medium fol. box).
- Biography/History:

Historian and academic. Peter J. Cochrane was born in Melbourne in 1950. Cochrane graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1978 where he became a tutor in politics, 1979-1980. In 1980 he published his first book, Industrialization and dependence: Australia's road to economic development, 1870-1939. Between 1979 and 1983 he co-edited Bowyang journal. He was appointed as a lecturer in history at the University of Sydney in 1982, teaching there until 1996, and becoming an Honorary Associate in History in 1997. In 1992 he published Simpson and the donkey: the making of a legend, which won a Fellowship of Australian Writers Award for Non-Fiction. Cochrane was awarded a National Library of Australia Harold White Fellowship for 1996.
