Puppethead
Puppethead began in Adelaide in 1991 as the brainchild of Greg Vincent and Rod Tyler. It was originally to be a free form music experiment, recorded only on 4-track to see what could be achieved within the limitations of the medium. Enlisting the help of local musicians such as Steve Fleming and Adrienne Sheerin, Puppethead soon took on a life of it's own, later adding drummer Dave Bosanko and bassist Anthony Newman to its ranks.
A self-titled mini-CD was released in May of 1992, through MDS in Australia and with a deal being struck for Europe with German label Zuma soon after. The song "Snakecharmer" was lifted from the CD with an eye-catching video filmed in the cellar of Greg's home in North Adelaide. After Rod Tyler left to pursue his music career in Melbourne in 1993, the band existed in name only, with David and Anthony leaving to pursue other interests. Greg approached multi-instrumentalist Peter Long to continue Puppethead in a scaled down version.
They chose to continue the band solely as a recording project, resulting in the "Lizardland" recordings, beginning in mid 1994 and after an extended hiatus finishing in early 1996, to be released in Germany in 1997. In 1998 work began on the 'Breathe' album. By this time, Peter had moved first to Melbourne (nearly 900kms away) and then Sydney (even further) so recording was fitted in between visits back to Adelaide. In two intense sessions in February of 1998 and 1999 (and with the help of session player Andy Spy) the album was finished and mixed. With this release the band had revisited their roots, digging into a back catalogue of unfinished material from their youth, but now brought back up to date with the aid of modern technology and good old blood, sweat and tears. In effect they were breathing life back into the material, hence the name of the album.
In September 1999 Peter revisited Adelaide in order to shoot two promotional videos for 'Breathe'. By this time the band was searching for a permanent drummer again and called upon the services of one David Bozanko, the original drummer for the band all those years ago At present, the band are planning a trip to Europe in 2000 and working on new material.
