- Abstract
- 'Craftsman makes violins to order. Hand-crafted violins by Australian instrument maker Harry Vatiliotis, of Sydney, are made individually to order in his workshop. Orders are taken up to two years in advance. Violins, violas and cellos produced by Vatiliotis are used in Australian orchestras and overseas. Clients seek him out at his home-workshop, set up in 1974-75 with a grant from the Australia Council. Special tools and equipment have been designed and developed by Mr Vatiliotis, who first trained as a toolmaker before being apprenticed to English-trained, veteran master craftsman Mr Arthur Smith, who retired in 1970 after 60 years of making fine-tuned instruments. Mr Vatiliotis, with his violins in varying stages of completion. Australian Information Service photograph by Peter Kelly P83/64 20/4/83/6'--Accompanying typewritten information.
