Description
Portrait of Captain John Mackay, explorer, sailor and harbourmaster. Born 26 March 1839, Inverness, Scotland. Mackay arrived in Victoria in 1854 on the Australia (ship), and in 1864 joined an expedition in search of northern grazing land. The district of Mackay, in Queensland, was named after him on 16 May 1860, but he did not stay in the area. Captain Mackay was the Brisbane harbourmaster between 1892 and 1902, and chairman of the Queensland Marine Board from 1902 until 1912 when he was appointed portmaster. He died at St. Helen's Hospital, South Brisbane, 11 March 1914. (Information taken from: Australian dictionary of biography, v. 5, 1974.)
