A large fig tree is depicted in the foreground of the image on the left side. The grassed area in front of the college building has a sparse scattering of trees. More buildings can be seen in the background of the image. The caption, studio mark and studio number are inscribed on the reverse of the negative. St John's Roman Catholic College at the University of Sydney was designed by William Wardell in 1859. Built in the Gothic Revival style the building is fourteenth century English in detail but it's plan is influenced by the Renaissance-Baroque tradition. This influence can be seen in the building's axial entry vestibule, Imperial staircase and linked interior spaces. After Wardell's resignation, Edmund Blacket was appointed to supervise the construction of the building to Wardell's plans between 1861 and 1863. 16/87 Tyrrell Inventory Number, 1349 Kerry Studio Number
