Description
Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt was joint United States - Australian naval communications station located 6km north of Exmouth. It was opened in 1967 as a relay station passing messages between Australian and United States' command centres, and their respective ships and submarines in the Indian and Western Pacific oceans. The base consisted of two areas, Area A and Area B. Area A located at Cape Murat housed a naval pier, a power plant, the Very Low Frequency antenna array (VLF) and the transmitter building. The VLF aerial in Area A at 387m is one of the tallest structures in the southern hemisphere. Area B included the main adminstration and staff accommodation facilities as well as a High Frequency transmitter (HF). The Americans withdrew from an active role in the Station's operation in 1992. The Royal Australian Navy handed over the running of the centre to the aviation company, Boeing Australia in 2002. The accomodation blocks have also been used as tourist accommodation.
