- Description
- Half-length, full face, seated, wearing hat with veil across her eyes, tied with bow at left cheek. Shoulder of her son-in-law Ned Griffiths visible on right. Oval frame, olive green mount. The mother of Ned Kelly, Ellen Quinn, was born in Ireland in 1832. She migrated to Australia with her parents and married ex-convict John 'Red' Kelly in 1851. As well as Ned, they had seven other children. John Kelly died in 1866 and Ellen married again in 1874 having three children with her second husband George King. After George King's disappearance Ellen resumed the name of Kelly and their three children grew up as Kelly.
