MS 1884 Papers of Sir John Monash
Papers
1876 - 1934
35.42 metres (253 boxes), plus 37 folio packages and 7 assorted
containers (slide boxes, indexes) in folio run.
Available for reference.
A biographical note has not been included in this list, because of the
existence of the official biography produced by Geoffrey Serle entitled
John Monash: a biography (Melbourne, Melbourne University Press,
1982). A lengthy entry on Monash is also provided in Volume 10 of the
Australian dictionary of biography.
Although the papers were given a temporary listing as long ago as 1967
it was not until 1980 that the collection was officially presented to the
Library and later physically transferred to the Manuscript Section through Dr
Serle. The donors were Monashs three grandchildren, David and J.C.M.
Bennett and Elizabeth Durré. Along with the papers, Dr Serle sent his
own revised list of them, his first draft of the biography, some correspondence
about Monash, and some miscellaneous papers. These are held at MS 6808.
A good summary, not only of the National Librarys Monash
Collection but also of the important component in the Australian War Memorial
and other groups of Monash papers, is provided by Dr Serle on pages 583 - 5 of
his biography.
Access and copying
According to the wishes of the donors, the entire collection is
available for reference.
With regard to photocopying, under the guidelines given by the donors,
the Library may, at its own discretion, supply readers with single copies of
limited portions of items in which the Monash family hold copyright, for the
purpose of research or private study. The Library may also give permission for
the publication of limited portions of manuscripts, for the purpose of
quotation, or of photographs where the Library believes this is appropriate
(copyright in these items being held, of course, by the Monash family).
However, the Library may not give permission for the publication of any
substantial portion or selection from the manuscripts, or of any significant
number of photographs, or for any copying for these purposes. Any requests of
this kind should be directed to the family.
Other Monash material
(Much of the material mentioned below was used in the exhibition between
November 1983 and November 1984 and was subsequently in the safe-keeping of NLA
for some time):
National Library of Australia
In April 1986 Mrs Durré presented to the Library a number of
books from Sir John Monashs personal library. A list of the volumes
retained with the manuscript collection (because of extensive annotations) is
included at Page 29. Appendix 1 lists the books taken into the Librarys
general printed book run because they filled gaps in the national
collection.
At TRC 1196 in the Oral History Collection, there is an address given by
Geoffrey Serle to the Royal Historical Society on 26 October 1982, entitled
The writing of biography - General Sir John Monash, 1865
1931.
Australian War Memorial
Various medals, decorations and badges of Sir John Monash contained in a
steel case were transferred to the Australian War Memorial in January 1985. A
list of these is attached at Appendix 2. The Memorial also holds a number of
items of Monashs regalia and military memorabilia, as well as over 20
boxes of his military papers.
In May 1986 the sword of Sir John Monash was transferred to the
Australian War Memorial. Also in May, the following books were transferred to
the Memorial:
Great Britain. Committee of Imperial Defence. Historical Section
Official history of the Russo-Japanese war. London, H.M.S.O., 1909 (2
volumes).
Monash University
The remainder of Monashs library was transferred to Monash
University at the discretion of Elizabeth Durré.
A NOTE ABOUT USE OF THE COLLECTION
There is, as yet, not individual numbering of the items in MS1884 nor a
correspondence index. Serles biography, however, is a very useful tool
for finding specific items in the collection and a working copy is held in the
Manuscript Section for the convenience of readers. The following example
demonstrates the suggested technique of using the biography:
- Reader is interested in letters to or from Major F.L. Outtrim. Looks
up INDEX under Outtrim. The first two references are to pages 112 and 113.
- Turning to Pages 112 and 113, reader finds a passage on p.113.
In July Outtrim made a strong recommendation on his behalf and Monash
wrote fulsomely to thank him.
- Reader them turns to NOTES for pages 112-113 and finds that
Outtrims letters were dated 24 July and 3 August 1893, while
Monashs reply was 5 August 1893.
- Reader turns to PRELIMINARY LIST. Letters received are in Series 1A.
The dates for Outtrims letters should be in Box 4, folders 26-35. On
requesting these folders the reader finds that both these letters are in fact
in folder 30 (Monash has annotated the 24 July letters to identify the writer
as Outtrim).
Outward letters are in Series 1B. The letterbook for Monashs
reply, 5 August 1893, is Number 5 in Box 52. Either by using
Monashs index at the beginning of the letterbook, or by going straight to
the date, the reader finds the copy of the letter from Monash to Outtrim on
page 61 of the letterbook.
The reader will see from this exercise that it is essential that the
items be kept in their correct, chronological sequence within their folders or
boxes, until such time as the item-numbering can be carried out.
It should also be pointed out that many of the letterbooks, volumes of
souvenirs and other items are extremely FRAGILE and should be handled with
great care.
