Covers the period June 22, 1772-December 22, 1773. Burney mentions the fate of various crew members, encountering icebergs in the Southern Indian ocean, the sighting of Van Diemen's Land, the accuracy of Tasman's maps, and describes the music, weapons, social customs etc. of the New Zealanders, Tongans, and Tahitians. The journal contains illustrations of canoes, and Tongan tunes in musical notation.
