Colin Bingham presented the first instalment of his papers to the National Library in 1974 and a second instalment in 1979. Following his death in 1986, the remaining papers were presented by his son Hugh Bingham.

The collection comprises correspondence, drafts (including ‘Walls of courage; despatches from London’), papers relating to journalism, notebooks, cutting books and photographs.

The correspondents include Clem Christesen, J.O. Fairfax, Edith England, Patricia Johnson, Norman Lindsay and Gavin Souter.


Biographical Note

Colin Bingham (1898-1986). Joined staff of the Brisbane Telegraph in 1922. London staff of Australian Associated Press 1940-42. Joined Sydney Morning Herald in 1942, holding posts of foreign correspondent 1943-48, leader-writer 1949-57, associate editor 1957-60, editor 1961-65.

Publications included Marcinelle and other verses (1925), A book of verse (1929), Men and affairs (1967), The affairs of women (1969) and Decline of innocence and other poems (1970).
