Historical Note

Phyllis Mander-Jones was born in Sydney in 1896 and educated at Abbotsleigh and the University of Sydney. She joined the staff of the Public Library of New South Wales in 1925. She was Mitchell Librarian from 1947 to 1957. In 1957 she went to London as the Library's representative and in 1962 she became the first Australian Joint Copying Project Officer, based in the Australian High Commission in London. After completing her great survey of manuscripts in the British Isles, she remained in England for several years. Her last years were spent in Adelaide where she compiled the Catalogue of manuscripts in the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch) (1981). She died in 1984.

In 1964 the Australian National University and the National Library of Australia decided to fund jointly a survey of manuscripts in Britain and Ireland relating to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. They appointed Mander-Jones as director. The survey carried out by Mander-Jones and a number of assistants took six years to complete. It covered both official and private repositories in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Manuscripts in the British Isles relating to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific was published by the ANU Press in 1972.

The project was based in the Australian High Commission in London. On its completion, Mander-Jones took the files containing correspondence, reports, notes, photocopies and drafts of the book to her home in Oxford. In 1973 she transferred the files to the National Library.
