Biographical Note
Mathilde Elizabeth Deane was the daughter of the notable engineer Henry Deane.
In 1913 she moved with her father from Sydney to Melbourne and for some years
worked for publishers, including Critchley Parker and Thomas Lothien. In May
1919 she was engaged by the Public Library of New South Wales to make
typescript transcripts of the despatches of the Governor of Victoria for the
period 1851-60, in the Public Library of Victoria. She completed the task in
1922 and then compiled an index to the despatches, as well as transcribing
letters of Matthew Flinders. In 1926 Deane emigrated to England, where she
remained permanently. She transcribed Victorian despatches and other papers
not held in Melbourne or Sydney, at the Public Record Office in London, but
gave up the work on account of ill-health in 1930.
