Introduction
Scope and Content
Together with H.M. Green and Morris Miller, Tom Inglis Moore was instrumental in establishing Australian literature as a subject worthy of academic and scholarly attention. During the 1940s he pioneered the study and teaching of Australian literature in universities. In 1953 he was responsible for the establishment of the first full course in Australian literature (at the Australian National University), a course he ran as Associate Professor until his retirement in 1966.
The Inglis Moore Papers document his interest and involvement in the promotion, study and teaching of Australian literature as a critic, academic and administrator. The correspondence reveals his extensive network of contacts in the field. These included almost all of the prominent Australian writers and critics of the period 1940-65. This correspondence, together with Inglis Moore's teaching and research files, drafts of his critical and creative writings, and papers documenting his involvement with the Commonwealth Literary Fund, the Australian Society of Authors and the Fellowship of Australian Writers, constitute one of the National Library's finest literary collections.

Provenance
In 1979, the year following Tom Inglis Moore's death, the National Library purchased the Inglis Moore Papers from his daughter, Pacita Alexander.
Related Materials
An oral history interview with Tom Inglis Moore, which was recorded by Hazel De Berg in 1967, can be found in the Library's Oral History Collection (DeB 210-211).
Arrangement
When the Library took delivery of the Inglis Moore Papers they were in a state of serious disorder. While many of the papers were in labelled files, most were in disarray. The final arrangement of the Papers is therefore an artificial one devised by the staff of the Manuscript Section. Wherever possible, however, Inglis Moore's own filing and record keeping system has been retained.

Published in 1971, Social Patterns in Australian literature was Inglis Moore's most substantial and enduring contribution to the study of Australian literature. He commenced working on the topic during the 1930s, developing many of its themes during his Commonwealth Literary Fund lectures at the University of Queensland in 1946 and the University of Sydney in 1951 (see Series 9A/1). In 1951 a first draft of the work, under the title The Social Mirror, shared first prize for a work of non-fiction in the Commonwealth Jubilee Literary Competition. In 1964 Inglis Moore submitted an expanded, updated, reshaped and retitled version of the work to the University of Melbourne in the form of an unsuccessful Doctor of Letters thesis. After his retirement in 1966, utilising financial assistance from the Australian Research Grants Committee, he again reshaped the work, this time into its final form.
