The original consignment includes correspondence, typescripts, bound copies of speeches, photographs, newsletters, cuttings, reports and printed material.

The MS Acc25.017 consignment comprises material relating to Jackson's time as a board member for the Reserve Bank and the NSW Police Board, includes board papers and correspondence. Also contains correspondence regarding Order of Australia Honours, various speeches, CSR LTD senior appointments, and condolence letters following Sir Gordon Jackson's death.

Provenance

The original consignment of papers were donated to the National Library by Sir Gordon Jackson in 1991.

Biographical Note

Australian businessman, Sir (Ronald) Gordon Jackson, was born in 1924 and educated at Brisbane Grammar School and the University of Queensland.

Sir Gordon served as Director, Member of the Board of Management, and Chairman, of various companies and organisations including; CSR Ltd (where he worked for 41 years), The Reserve Bank of Australia, Australia/Japan Business Co-operation Committee, the Commonwealth Government's Economic Consultative Group, Australian Industry Development Corporation, United Technologies Corporation, Rothmans Holdings Limited, Sydney Hospital Foundation for Research, Australian National University, Australian Graduate School of Management UNSW, Asian Institute of Management, Order of Australia Association, Police Board of New South Wales, and the Salvation Army Advisory Board.

He chaired the Jackson Committee which advised the government on the Policies for Manufacturing Industry in Australia (1974-75), and chaired the Committee to Review Australia's Overseas Aid Program (1983-84).

He was awarded numerous Australian and overseas awards and honours, including Companion of the Order of Australia (1976), Knight of the Order of Australia - For Service to Industry and Community (1983), an Honorary Doctorate of Science at the University of NSW (1983), Prime Minister of Japan 's Trade Award (1987), and Grand Cordon (first class) of the Order of the Sacred Treasure of Japan (1987).

Sir Gordon died on 1 June 1991.

Series 1. Personal correspondence, 1942-64 - Box 1

Letters and postcards sent by Jackson to his parents. The letters were written while serving in the AIF during the War.

Series 2. Family correspondence, 1916-19 - Box 1-2

A group of family letters written by Jackson's father, Vaughan Jackson, to his future wife Mollie O'Rourke.

Series 3. General correspondence, 1971-90 - Box 2-3

This series comprises letters sent to Jackson and copies of most of his replies. The letters include an invitation to join the Council of the University of New South Wales, an invitation to be the Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the New Orleans 1984 World Exposition and business letters. The correspondents include Justice Gordon Samuels, D.T. Veigh, James Creer, Akira Soejima, John Whitehead, Satoshi Sumita, Sir Brian Massy-Greene, Sir Zelman Cowen, Richard Broinowski, Richard Woolcott, Alan Locke and Christian R. Sonne.

Series 4. Speeches, 1965-90 - Box 4-7

17 bound volumes containing copies of speeches given by Jackson at business dinners and lunches, university graduation ceremonies, opening ceremonies, seminars and conferences.

Series 5. Photographs and miscellaneous personal documents, 1913-90 - Box 8, Folio-Box 35 (MS 8353)

This series includes photographs, notebooks, school reports and other personal items dating back from Jackson's school days.

The Noel Butlin Archives at the ANU also holds Jackson's personal items, including his school reports, notebooks, passports and diaries (1940-82).

Series 6. Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd, 1966-85 - Box 9-13, Folio-Box 35 (MS 8353)

Jackson joined the CSR in 1941 and stayed with the organisation and its subsidiaries until 1985. His career included General Manager / Chief Executive of CSR (1972-82), Director of CSR (1972-83), Deputy Chairman of

CSR (1983-85), Chairman of Pilbara Iron (1972-75), Chairman of Gove Alumina (1972-77) and Chairman of Thiess Holdings (1980-82).

The papers include financial reports, group results, copies of corporate strategic plans, copies of operation plan and two year forecast, monthly reports, papers relating to the board of directors and various working papers.

The Noel Butlin Archives at the ANU also holds papers relating to CSR (1955-87).

Series 7. United Technologies Corporation, 1983-90 - Box 14

Jackson was a member of the Pacific Advisory Council of the United Technologies Corporation. The papers in this series include a photographic album containing photographs of a P.A.C. meeting (October 1984), a video tape of an Interscan press conference in Sydney (February 1985) and letters of Alexander Haig and Sherwood Goldberg.

Series 8. Rothmans Holdings Limited, 1988 - Box 14

Jackson was a member of the Board of Directors of Rothmans Holdings Limited. The file contains agendas for its Annual General Meeting..

Series 9. Australian Industry Development Corporation, 1983-90 - Box 14-17

Jackson was the Chairman of the Australian Industry Development Corporation. The files include policy papers, papers on Board meetings and appointments, annual reports, staff share scheme and general A.I.D.C. files.

Series 10. Foundation for Development Corporation, 1986-90 - Box 17-18

Jackson was a member of the Board of Governors of the Foundation. The files include letters of K.W. Taylor, minutes of meetings, reports and papers of Board of Governors meetings.

Series 11. Jackson Committee - Box 18

In 1974 Jackson was appointed Chairman of the Committee to Advise on Policies for Manufacturing Industry by Prime Minister E.G. Whitlam (also known as the Jackson Committee). The papers includes copy of the 'White Paper on Manufacturing Industry', a notebook, cuttings and a copy of the report (3 volumes).

Series 12. Australian Mission to People's Republic of China, 1973 - Box 19

Jackson was nominated as a member of the first Australian Government trade mission, headed by Sir Ian McLennan, to China in May 1973. The files contain photographic albums and a newspaper cutting.

Series 13. Committee to Review Australia's Overseas Aid Program, 1983-88 - Box 20

Jackson was appointed Chairman of the Committee which was set up by the Australian Government in late 1982. Its purpose was to prepare a report for the Minister of Foreign Affairs on the future directions and form of Australian aid program. The Jackson Report was tabled in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bill Hayden, in June 1984. The papers include a copy of the Jackson Report, correspondence and cuttings. The correspondents are Bill Hayden, A.A. Street, Peter Crawley and June Verrier.

Series 14. Australia - Japan Relations, 1988-89 - Box 20

The files include papers relating to the Australia - Japan Business Corporation Committee, correspondence and a copy of the Ad Hoc Working Committee on Australia - Japan Relations. The correspondents are Peter Drysdale and B.N. Kelman.

Series 15. Sydney Hospital Foundation For Research, 1988-89 - Box 21

Jackson was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Sydney Hospital Foundation for Research. The papers include reports.

Series 16. Australian National University, 1986-90 - Box 21

Sir Gordon was Pro-Chancellor (1986) and Chancellor (1987-90) of the Australian National University . The papers include correspondence and cuttings. The correspondents include Geoffrey Yeend, R.V. Dubs, P.M. White and Helen Hughes.

Series 17. Order of Australia Association, 1980-90 - Box 22-24

The series include papers relating to fund raising, a tapestry appeal, an appeal for the Queen's statue in the new Parliament House in Canberra and newsletters.

Series 18. Awards and Honours, 1984-90 - Box 25-26

The many awards and Honours received by Jackson included Companion Order of the Australia (1976), Commander 's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1980), Australian of the Year (1980), Knight of Order of Australia (1983), Prime Minister of Japan's Trade Award (1987) and Grand Cordon Order of the Sacred Treasure of Japan (1987). The papers include letters of congratulations and cuttings.

Jackson was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board in 1983-90. The files include the Red Shield Appeal (1986) and papers of the Advisory Board.
