Scope and Content
This collection comprises papers and material relating to Cheryl Stock's career as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. The collection is divided into two sections. The first comprises papers relating to Stock's career in general and the second to her work as founding Artistic Director of the northern Queensland contemporary dance company Dance North (1984-1995). There are working notes, research notes, programs, scripts, publicity material, press cuttings and photographs relating to the various productions with which Stock has been involved. The small amount of correspondence included in the collection relates only to specific productions on which Stock was working. There are also copies of journal articles, keynote addresses and seminar papers by Stock.

Folders 1-24 (boxes 1-4) contain material relating to Stock's career in general
Folders 25-46 (boxes 4-7) contain material relating to Stock's work as Artistic Director of the northern Queensland contemporary dance company Dance North.
Provenance
The collection was donated to the National Library by Cheryl Stock in 2000, as part of the Keep Dancing! project. Keep Dancing! (1997-2001) was a joint project between ScreenSound Australia, the National Library and Ausdance.

Biographical Note
Cheryl Frances Stock is a dancer, teacher and choreographer. She was born in Adelaide on 29 October 1948.
Stock joined the Australian Dance Theatre in 1969, after completing a BA Hons in Spanish and French languages at Flinders University. In 1974, Stock was awarded a Federal Government grant to study modern dance in New York. She has danced with a number of Australian companies including the Australian Dance Theatre, Human Veins Dance Theatre and the One Extra Company.
In 1984, Stock was founding Artistic Director of Dance North, a contemporary dance company based in northern Queensland. She choreographed a number of works, many in conjunction with theatre companies or theatre directors, often using the designs and music of Australian artists. In 1995, Stock resigned as Artistic Director to pursue a career as a freelance choreographer and artist.
In 1993 Stock was awarded a three-year Australian Artists' Creative Fellowship for her outstanding artistic contribution to the nation, which she undertook in 1995-1997.
Between 1988 and 1995 Stock worked extensively on cultural exchange programs in Asia, especially in Vietnam where she worked with the Vietnam Opera Ballet, the National Dance School and the National Mime Company. In 1995 she was honoured by the Vietnamese government for services to dance in Vietnam and for services to the women's movement.
Stock is Vice-President (Pacific region) of the World Dance Alliance - Asia Pacific Centre. Other positions she has held include:
1996-2000 National President of Ausdance, the Australian Dance Council
1997-1999 Chair of the Emerging Choreographer's Fund for the Australia Council
1990-1992 Member of the Arts Advisory Committee of the Queensland government
1987-1989 Chair of the Australia Council's Dance Fund
In 1999, Stock completed a PhD at the Centre for Innovation in the Arts, Academy of the Arts, Queensland University of Technology. Her thesis was entitled 'Making intercultural dance in Vietnam: issues of context and process from the perspective of an Australian choreographer and her colleagues from Vietnam Opera Ballet Theatre (Nha Hat Nhac Vu Kich Viet Nam) 1995-1999.'
In 2000, Stock was appointed Associate Professor, Head of Dance, Academy of the Arts, Queensland University of Technology.
