The papers were purchased from Matthew Condon in 1998.

The bulk of the collection comprises edited draft manuscripts and typescripts of several of Condon’s works.  Also included are draft typescripts of some unpublished short stories, a small amount of correspondence with publishers, letters from the author Georgia Savage, publicity photographs, reviews and newspaper clippings.

The original arrangement of the papers has been preserved by the Library.


Biographical note

Matthew Condon is a journalist and an author.  Born on 5 March 1962, he was educated at the University of Queensland, and studied German at the Goethe Institute, Bremen in Germany.

Condon began his career as a journalist with the Gold Coast Bulletin in 1982.  From here he moved to the Brisbane Courier Mail, and then to the Sydney Sun-Herald, for a time as its London correspondent, and more recently in Sydney as literary editor.

Condon’s first book, The motorcycle café, was published in 1988.  Since then he has gone on to publish several works, as well as contribute short stories to collections, journals and newspapers. 

Condon has received the following awards and grants for his work as an author:

· Literature Board of the Australia Council grant,1989

· The motorcycle Café, shortlisted for the NSW State Literary Award for Fiction, 1989

· Literature Board of the Australia Council fellowship, 1990

· Usher, shortlisted for the Banjo Awards for Australian Literature, 1992

· A Night at the Pink Poodle, the Steele Rudd Award for Fiction, 1995

· Voted one of the Sydney Morning Herald’s 10 best young Australian novelists, 1996

Series 1 Correspondence, 1987-95

This series comprises business correspondence, mainly with publishers, and a folder of letters to Condon from the author Georgia Savage.  The principal correspondents include James Bradley, Carmen Callil (Chatto & Windus), Luke Davies, Liam Davison, Anthony Harwood (his agent), Jan Smark Nilsson (National Book Council), Bruce Pascoe (Pascoe Publishing), Bill Scott-Kerr (Picador), Tom Shapcott (Director, Literature Board of the Australia Council), and the University of Queensland Press.

This series comprises material relating to Condon’s novel Usher, published by University of Queensland Press, 1991 (260pp).  Included are notebooks, edited drafts and proofs, reviews and publicity photographs.
