Available for reference

The records were donated to the National Library by the Australian Council for Overseas Aid (ACFOA) in 1995 and 1998.

The records include files on the founding of ACFOA, correspondence, minutes, reports, chronological files of board meetings, education campaigns, files on particular countries and member agencies, material of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCAD) and records relating to the International Disaster Emergency Committee (IDEC).

Organisational note

Formed in 1965, ACFOA is the co-ordinating body for some 90 non-government organisations working in the field of overseas aid and development.

The common objective of all of its members is to work for social and economic justice, respond to human needs and help produce conditions through which people can realise their full potential as human beings.

ACFOA provides a forum for consultation and co-operation between its member agencies, together with a means of making common representation on their behalf to the Australian Government and to overseas governments and international organisations.

ACFOA consists of:

the Council, which is the meeting place of all the member agencies, the policy making body and the supreme governing body;

the Executive, which is elected by the Council to implement policy and direction; and

the Secretariat, which is led by an Executive Director responsible for the management of staff and the program of work as agreed to by the Council and the Executive.

The Executive Director in 2003 is Graham Tupper. Past Executive Directors have included Janet Hunt, Geoffrey Solomon, Arthur Mears, Mick Sullivan, Bob Whan and Russell Rollason.

Further information about ACFOA is available from its website at http://www.acfoa.asn.au.

Arrangement of records

The records were received in three consignments. The original consignment arrived in August 1995 and the additions in January and September 1998. The box numbering is continuous whilst folder numbering for each consignment commences with folder 1.

The arrangement devised by ACFOA was maintained when the material was sorted by the National Library. Lists for each consignment were provided by ACFOA and these were used and edited by the Library. A list of acronyms and initials commonly used follows. A concordance of the box numbering provided by ACFOA and the manuscript box numbers allocated by the Library is available at the end of this list.
