The Breckwoldt Papers were donated to the Library by Roland Breckwoldt
in 1992.
The arrangement of the papers has been imposed by Library staff.
The papers comprise correspondence, reviews, drafts, notes and research
material including articles, theses, reports and other papers relating to
Breckwoldts publications Wildlife in the home paddock (1983) and
A very elegant animal: the dingo (1988) and the report he edited for
the National Trust of Australia, A heritage study of Hartley, Kanimbla
and Megalong Valleys.
Biographical Note
Roland Breckwoldt was born on 8 February 1944 at Tatura, Victoria. He
was educated at Macquarie Boys High School (Rydalmere, NSW), Hawkesbury
Agricultural College (where he graduated with a Diploma of Agriculture in 1965
and a Diploma of Rural Extension in 1970) and the University of New England,
where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1977.

International Union for Conservation and Natural Resources (IUCN); member of
the advisory committee, Aboriginal Employment Development Policy Feral
Animals, Noxious Plants and Game Meat Industry Program of the Department of
Primary Industries and Energy; President, Tantawangalo Catchment Protection
Association; President, South Coast Conservation Working Group and was a
Council member of the Australian Conservation Foundation.

Series Description
Series 1. Wildlife in the home paddock,
1978-83
Correspondence, reviews, and other papers relating to Breckwoldts
monograph Wildlife in the home paddock: nature conservation for Australian
farmers, published by Angus & Robertson in 1983. Breckwoldt was
awarded a grant by the World Wildlife Fund to write the book. In 1983 it was
shortlisted in the New South Wales Premiers Literary Awards and won Best
Book on Animal Conservation in the 1983 Whitely Medal awards given by the Royal
Zoological Society of New South Wales.
Many of the files are annotated WWF by Breckwoldt and
folders 8-22 have been roughly arranged in the order of the chapters in the
book. The files contain correspondence, manuscript and typewritten drafts,
notes, articles, publications and lectures by others, and other research
materials.

Series 2. A heritage study of the Hartley, Kanimbla and
Megalong Valleys, 1982-83
Breckwoldt was the project director and editor for this study for the
National Trust of Australia, 1983. The series contains drafts, notes,
correspondence, maps and research materials.

Series 3. A very elegant animal: the dingo,
1980-88
Breckwoldts monograph on the dingo was published by Angus &
Robertson in 1988. The book was partly funded by a grant from the National
Parks and Wildlife Service of New South Wales and the Literature Board of the
Australia Council Annual Park Writers Awards.
The series comprises two annotated typescript drafts and a small number
of articles and research materials on the dingo.

Papers used by Breckwoldt in researching his various writing
projects.
1-14 Loose articles, theses, and reports by other authors, 1966-88.
Topics include birds, dieback, fauna (including deer, feral cats, foxes, wild
horses, dingoes and reptiles), fire, fisheries, pests, remnant vegetation,
roadside vegetation, salinity, soil conservation, trees, and wildlife refuges
and reserves.
