Introduction

Scope and Content

Papers relating to Cherry Ripe's writing on food. The collection is composed mainly of drafts of Cherry Ripe's latest book, Ripe enough?, published by Allen & Unwin in 1999. It also includes correspondence with the publisher, recipes and related notes, and gastronomic articles. The main correspondents are Foong Ling Kong, editor with Allen & Unwin, Rowland Holmes and Glenn Wightman.

The 2001 addition contains correspondence, faxes, cuttings, drafts and proofs relating to the production of Cherry Ripe's first two books; Goodbye Culinary Cringe (1993) and Australia the beautiful cookbook (1995). The main correspondents are her editors Julie Gibbs and Anna Dollard at Allen & Unwin and Jane Fraser at Weldon Owen Inc.

Provenance

Files 1-10 were donated to the Library by Cherry Ripe in October 1999. A second instalment (files 11-21) was received in February 2001.

Biographical Note

Cherry Ripe is a journalist, writer and broadcaster. Her books include Goodbye culinary cringe (1993), Australia the beautiful cookbook (1995) and Ripe enough? (1999). She was food columnist for The Australian and has contributed to The Bulletin, Vogue entertaining, Australian gourmet traveller, the Wall Street journal, the Asian Wall Street journal and others. She has given papers at international food conferences and in 1994 she gave the keynote address at the Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery, which had as its theme 'Going Today, Gone Tomorrow? Endangered Foods and Cuisines'. She has won a number of awards including the National Award for Gastronomic Writing (1990), the Kellogg's Award for Excellence in Nutrition Journalism (1993) and the inaugural Phillip Muskett Memorial Prize (1994).
