Biographical Note

Lyn Brown was born in Fairfield, N.S.W. in 1918, the daughter of John Ingoldsby and Evelyn May Brown. She was educated at state primary schools and Parramatta High School. She obtained her B.A in 1940 and her M.A in 1946 from the University of Sydney.

Brown has travelled extensively both overseas and in Australia. Her first trip, in 1937, was with a party of Rangers, on the Guide Movement's first world tour, representing the Macquarie Division of New South Wales.

From 1942 until 1951 Brown worked at the C.S.I.R.O as an editor of scientific papers and as a librarian. It was while she was at the C.S.I.R.O. that Brown met Marjorie Barnard. From 1951 until 1965 she was at home with her three children. From 1965 until 1970 she worked in the New South Wales Departments of Education and Technical Education, as a teacher of modern languages and in 1977 was an honorary translator at the 42nd International P.E.N. Congress in Sydney. She was a teacher of French at the Georges River Community Service Adult Leisure Learning Centre at Oatley, NSW from 1982-86.

Brown is married to Frederick Charles Brown and has two sons, one daughter and, in 1993, eight grandchildren.

Brown's publications include Late summer (1970), Jacaranda and Illawarra flame (1973), Listen! Its poetry, give it a go (1973) and Going home at night (1979). She has had poetry published in various magazines, and has been a poetry reviewer and member of the Australian Society of Authors.

Professor Coghill was Tutor in English Literature at Oxford from 1925 to 1957 and was Merton Professor of English Literature from 1957 to 1966. One of his main interests was translating Chaucer into modern English. He died in 1980.
