Administrative History

The Australian Council of Archives was a consultative body formed on 28 November 1984, and known as the National Archival Forum until 1985. The Council was wound up in 2000.

The Council's Executive Committee comprised an elected President, the Director-General of the Australian Archives, the President of the Australian Society of Archivists, two representatives of State or Territory Archives and two representatives elected by the remaining members of the Council.

Membership of the Council was open to any Australian organisation involved in the collection and preservation of archival materials in accordance with accepted standards of practice, and which demonstrated a continuing commitment to the development and application of such standards in the care and use of archives.

The objectives of the Council were to provide opportunities for members to meet and discuss matters of archival concern, to represent members in matters where members agreed such representation was necessary or desirable, and to organise and coordinate activities and projects for the benefit of members of the Council.
