PORT PHILLIP.
H. M. S. Rattlesnake, which arrived
late on Friday night from Port Phillip,
brings but little news, His Excellency
and suite came up in her, and landed on
Saturday morning under a salute of guns
from the Rattlesnake and Dawes' Battery.
We learn that this interesting settlement
is progressing rapidly : tho country is
laid out into three counties, namely,
William, Melbourne, and Bourke, The
site of two townships had been chosen,
and the streets marked out. Several
stores and other buildings had already
been commenced. The Governor bad
taken a tour through the country, and
expressed himself much satisfied with it.
The Regia had arrived previous to the
sailing of the the Rattlesnake.-We are
sorry that we cannot announce any fresh
intelligence respecting Mr. Hesse or Mr.
Gellibrand, sen. : Mr. Gellibrand, jun.
having returned to the settlement after a
wearisome but fruitless search of many
days through the country. The supposed
fate of these two unfortunate gentlemen
has made a deep impression on the minds
of so small a community, where they
were leading members : the only remain-
ing hope is that their adventurous spirits
led them to cross the country to Portland
Bay. A crown sale of town allotments
of land is to take place on the first of
June next, when it is expected there will
be some spirited competition. |
