    The picture on the top, left, shows sets of wheels which have been taken from engines which are sent to the railway workshops at Cardiff at regular intervals for complete overhaul. The tyres and axles are turned to standard measurements, or replaced, as necessary. In the adjoining picture are boilers, which have been lifted from the frames of various classes. The boiler-frames are strengthened, and the tubes are removed, cleaned, and examined, so that those of less than a rigidly-prescribed thickness may be scrapped, and replaced with new tubing. Below, at left, is the blacksmith's shops. It belies its name, but the explanation of its spotless cleanliness is that smoke and fumes from each forge are carried underground, and thence through the roof in a central shaft, by means of a powerful draft.
