    The position of Port Arthur on the Kwan-tung is admirably shown on the above map, for which we are indebted to the London "Daily Telegraph." Ten years ago the Japanese stormed and captured the fortress, which was then weakly defended by Chinese. Heavy siege guns have on this occasion been laboriously dragged from Dalny, 20 miles distant as the crow flies. To-day's cables state that 20,000 Japanese occupy heights from which they seriously threaten the Russian forts. Military opinion in Great Britain and the United States, and lately in France, inclines to the view that the fortress is doomed.
