Vladivostock, one of the finest harbours in the Far East, and Russia's chief seaport and naval station in the Pacific Ocean, lies at the end of a long peninsula running into [?]er the Great Bay, at the southern extremity of the maritime province. The entrance is divided into two narrow channels by Dundas Island. The harbour, which is surrounded by hills on all sides, runs for half-a-mile in a northerly direction, and then turns east for another mile. Though situated on the same latitude as Boston, Vladivostock is ice-bound for four months of the year—from December to April; but a powerful ice-breaker keeps a passage open for the shipping. There is a floating dock, accommodating vessels up to 3000 tons, and a graving dock, measuring 625ft. by 120ft., with a depth of 30ft. The town, which has a population of 30,000, is built on the north side of the harbour, and has several fine buildings.
