  2. LIGHT AND HEAVY CRUISERS.

    The term cruiser covers a range of naval vessels built for speed and manoeuvrability and with medium armament. The ship on the left is the 4,200 ton antiaircraft cruiser "Cairo" which formed part of the escort for a convoy proceeding to Malta in August, 1942, when it was struck by a torpedo from a U'boat. The cruiser was so badly damaged that it had to be sunk after the crew had been taken off. The second warship is our own Australian cruiser "Canberra," of 10,000 tons, also sunk last August, during the American landing operations in the Solomon Islands. Captain Getting remained on ...
