  20. RICH NEW GOLD REEF AT BENDIGO.

    Bendigo is elated at the discovery of a new gold reef in the Hercules mine, which, it is hoped, will lead to a great revival in gold-mining in that city. The reef was found in a winze sunk 100 feat below the 1,620ft. level. The picture on the right shows the manager of the mine (Mr. J. Ennor) and the underground manager (Mr. T. Pinder) inspecting the face of the north level being driven on the reef off the bottom of the winze. Mr. Ennor is pointing out a fine sample of gold embodded in the quartz, which is more than eight feet wide. The machine is a rock drill worked by compressed air. The picture on the left shows the bottom of the shaft. Water is making freely, and as only a limited time can be devoted to baling, it rises above the bottom of the plat, and the manager, on reaching the bottom of the level for his daily inspection, is frequently lowered into water that reaches to his knees. The winze is 600 feet from the bottom of the shaft, and is free of water. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
