  2. Australians in Occupation of Remains of Sio, New Guinea

    THE TAKING OF SIO, JAPANESE-HELD BASE, on the north coast of the Huon Peninsula, New Guinea, was simply a matter of Australian troops walking into a deserted village. There was nothing to capture but a site, and what was there had been levelled by our bombers, possibly months before. The landing beach at Sio is seen picturesquely at left, with one of our landing craft drawn up on it. At right, Australian troops are seen going ashore from an LCM near Sio Mission.
