ANOTHER EFFECTIVE STRIKE AGAINST JAPANESE SHIPPING was made recently by Lt-Gen George C. Kenney's US 5th Air Force bombers off the New Guinea coast near Wewak. During this raid wave after wave of Liberator, Mitchell, and Boston bombers dropped their loads on a convoy comprising two transports and three escorting corvettes. The entire convoy was sunk and all personnel on board were lost. Left: Half-hidden by smoke and spray from bursting bombs, its engines silenced, a transport slows to a stop and becomes an easy target for bombardiers. Shortly after photograph was taken the vessel was hit several times more, and immediately sank. Right: A vessel zig-zagging in hopeless efforts to escape the deluge of bombs raining from the sky.
