Fix this textsight of the Lammermuir
Fix this textHills, seventeen miles from Edin-
Fix this textburgh, stands the ' great mansion,
Fix this textLennoxlove.
Fix this textMost of the historical associations of
Fix this textLennoxlove are derived from the three
Fix this textand a half centuries during which it was
Fix this textowned by the family of Maitland. As a
Fix this textfortress it was besieged more than once
Fix this textby the invading English armies. The
Fix this textDuke of Gloucester, afterwards Richard
Fix this text111, marched on Edinburgh in 1482, and,
Fix this texthaving entered into a treaty of peace,
Fix this textretired to a safer position behind the
Fix this textRiver Tyne at Lethington, the original
Fix this textname of Lennoxlove.
Fix this textIt was about the middle of the 14th
Fix this textcentury that Lennoxlove became the
Fix this textproperty of the Maitlands, to which
Fix this textfamily belonged William, Secretary of
Fix this textState to Mary Queen of Scots, and John,
Fix this textfirst and only Duke of Lauderdale and
Fix this texta member of Charles ll’s notorious
Fix this textCabal. Lauderdale, who died without
Fix this textissue, left the property to his second
Fix this textwife’s son by a former marriage, from
Fix this textwhom it was purchased by “La Belle
Fix this textStewart,” Duchess of Lennox and Rich-
Fix this textmond, a famous beauty of the Court of
Fix this textCharles 11. She bequeathed the property
Fix this textto a cousin, Walter Stewart, Master of
Fix this textBlantyre, having stipulated that the
Fix this texthouse should “be named and called
Fix this textLennoxlove.” In 1900, upon the death
Fix this textof the last Lord Blantyre, Lennoxlove
Fix this textpassed through the female line to the
Fix this textBairds, from whom it was purchased in
Fix this text1947 by the present Duke of Hamilton.
Fix this textThe house, which is open to the public
Fix this textat certain times, is full of interesting and
Fix this textbeautiful things, and among them is the
Fix this textsilver casket in which were found the
Fix this textlove letters from Mary Queen of Scots
Fix this textto Bothwell, known as the Casket Letters,
Fix this textwhich were to prove her undoing. Among
Fix this textthe exhibits of historic interest is the
Fix this textpathetic death mask of Mary Queen of
Fix this textScots. In the China Hall is displayed a
Fix this textcollection of line English and Continental
Fix this textchina, among which is the beautiful
Fix this textarmorial set of early Crown Derby
Fix this textporcelain.
