Scope and Content
MS 44 comprises a ship newspaper dating from Oct. 24th to Dec. 12th 1874, written on board SS Durham on her maiden voyage. Mainly consists of passenger contributions of prose, poetry, etc., news of the week, telegrams received, riddles and items of onboard activities, and daily navigational details. The newspaper is lighthearted in tone, includes cartoons, pen-drawings and watercolours, prospects for printing and publishing the Durham Boulli-tin, also contains subscription list (1 v.).
Background
S.S. Durham was owned by Messrs. Money Wigram and Sons. It left London on its maiden voyage on July 21st 1874 taking 54 days to complete the voyage to Melbourne.
