Biographical Note
Joyce Smith, an active campaigner of women's rights was born in Sydney on 21 August 1916, educated at North Sydney Girls' High School and graduated from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Economics. She married Hugh McConnell in 1939.
Throughout her lifetime Joyce McConnell was a member of various councils and committees and was the only person to be appointed to both the National Women's Advisory Council (1978-1980, 1982-1984) and the National Women's Consultative Council (1984-1986). She was also the President of the National Council of Women of the Australian Capital Territory in 1962-1964, leader of the Australian Delegation to the International Council of Women Conference, Vancouver in 1976, and President of the National Council of Women of Australia in 1973-1976. She was awarded an OBE in 1976 and Queen's Jubilee Medal in 1978.
Joyce McConnell died in Canberra on Thursday, 15 August 1991.
