Introduction
Scope and Contents
The bulk of the collection consists of the office records of the Country Women's Association of Australia from 1945-1969. As far as possible the original order has been maintained. Most of the records for the period 1945-53 are organised into files according to the state occupying the chair at each annual conference. The later material (mostly from 1953-1969, but with some earlier material) has been kept in subject files.
The minutes of the Association record annual conferences from 1945 to 1953, and biennial conferences from then on. Minutes of extra-ordinary meetings are included. There are also minutes of the 31st National conference, July 2003.
The remaining material consists of some financial records, photographs and printed and published material.

Biographical Note
The Country Women's Association of Australia was formed after representatives of State Association met in Sydney in May 1943 and April 1944 to discuss some from of union. Two of the basic proposals put forward at the May 1943 meeting were.
- The purpose of the Association be to enable country women throughout Australia to speak with one voice on matters affecting all of them, more especially matters concerning the welfare of women and children'.
- The Association would not deal with matters of state management, which would be left entirely to each state as at present'.
The first conference of the Country Women's Association of Australia was held at the Melbourne Town Hall on 7th June, 1945. From 1945 to 1953 conferences were held annually, and thereafter biennially. Each State Association holds nation office for 2 years in turn. The National President is elected at a biennial conference to which all states send delegates.
