Introduction

Scope and Contents

MS 7746 comprises early Australian and New Zealand documents. Included are monetary documents, ca. 1840-1897, such as promissory notes, bills of exchange and a proof of the first pound note from the Union Bank of Australia; military commissions; documents relating to land such as grants and a surveyor's report relating to the District of Lancefield in Victoria; theatre programs, song lyrics and poetry; appointments to various government positions; passenger tickets for a family travelling on the "Westminster" in 1857; legal documents such as wills, law lists, summonses, warrants and protection orders; handbills advertising a variety of events; playbills for theatrical productions including one dating from 1794 titled "Shipley's satirical auction"; a sketch of Kororareka, published in 1860; church documents such as appeals, appointments and addresses; mining documents such as surveys and leases; philatelic items such as first day covers, mainly relating to Antarctica and dating from the 1950s, postage stamps, and postcards from the late 1800s; and, a eulogy to Captain James Cook, May 1794.

The London Chartered Bank of Australia was founded in 1852 by leading English merchants and financiers. Its head office was in London. In 1859 the London Chartered Bank's main Australian branch was constructed in Collins Street, Melbourne. It had a branch in Sydney, another in Geelong and nine branches on the Victorian goldfields reflecting the flow of capital arising from the Victorian gold rush. In 1893 the Bank ran into difficulties and became the London Bank of Australia Ltd (1893-1921), and in 1921 it was taken over by the English, Scottish and Australasian Bank Ltd (1921-).
