Introduction
Scope and Contents
The papers in this collection extend from Meale's childhood until the early 2000s. They include correspondence, music manuscripts, contracts and financial records, programs, speeches, radio scripts, lectures, research material, notebooks, diaries, recordings, photographs, family history papers, published music used and collected by Meale, newspaper cuttings, ephemera and publications generally about Meale.
The papers cover many facets of Meale's life, but primarily his creative output. The largest series and the great strength of the collection is Meale's music manuscripts, which cover the period 1945-2002 and consists of full orchestral scores, orchestral parts and other drafts of sketches.
Meale has noted that some manuscripts are missing and were probably lost when he moved from Adelaide to Mullumbimby in far northern NSW in the 1980s. Nonetheless, the papers are a wide-ranging record of Meale's intellectual and creative activity from his early teens to 2004.
Papers added in 2010 include music scores, correspondence, ephemera, awards and photographs. The music scores are largely manuscript, printed and published works of Richard Meale, with a smaller number of compositions and published works by other composers, including Andrew Ford and Freeman McGrath.

Preferred Citation
Items from this collection should be cited as ['Title or description of manuscript item], Papers of Richard Meale, National Library of Australia,, [class/series/file number]'.
Provenance
The majority of the records appear to have been created or collected by Richard Meale. The papers were transferred to the Library in six accessions (instalments) throughout 2004, with three transferred directly from Meale. The remaining three were transferred by associates and friends of Meale - two former students and Meale's former agent, Barbara Mobbs. It does not appear that any of these custodians rearranged or added to the records during their period of custodianship.
The papers from Barbara Mobbs comprise letters from Patrick White to Meale. They were received at the same time as another collection MS 10106, which also relates to Richard Meale.
All six accessions were acquired from Meale in 2004.
Further papers were transferred by Amanda Meale in 2010.
Related Materials
A 1965 interview with Richard Meale by Hazel de Berg (http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/461318) is held in the Oral History Collection. The Papers of Barbara Mobbs (MS 10106) consist of papers relating to Meale. As Meale's agent 1986-2000, Barbara Mobbs collected many papers by Meale including correspondence, publications and copies of both manuscript and published music. Other manuscript collections which contain papers relating to Meale include the Papers of Patrick White (MS 9982, Series 5.12, 9, 19 and 23), the Papers of James Murdoch (MS 8372), the Papers of Andrew Ford (MS 9549) and the Papers of Larry Sitsky (MS 5630). These and other manuscript collections can be identified by searching the Library's catalogue.
Published music by Meale is listed the Library's catalogue. A search for Richard Meale as author, limited to format 'Music' will provide a list of published music by Meale.
Arrangement
The original consignment was transferred to the Library in six instalments in 2004. The largest instalment was packed and sent from Meale's Mullumbimby house by the Library's Curator of Music who worked with Meale during this process. Three instalments were transferred by associates who were custodians of some of Meale's papers - two former students and his former agent, Barbara Mobbs. Of the remaining two instalments, one was transferred directly by Meale from his Sydney home; the other was sent from Meale's house in Mullumbimby and was packed and sent by a friend of Meale's hired by the Library.
Given the range of instalments, it became clear to the archivists that an over-arching original order was almost non-existent. The Curator of Music who visited Meale in Mullumbimby in 2004, spent several days assisting with sorting, labelling and packing the papers. The staff member, together with a colleague and Meale, put the papers into semi-organised piles and foldered and labelled the papers. The remaining papers arrived in an array of different size cartons and folios - some were foldered while others were loose.
With no distinct original order apparent, Library staff imposed order onto the collection and arranged the papers into 15 series. It should be noted that a large part of the collection had been foldered and titled - either by Meale himself or by the Curator of Music in consultation with Meale. These files have been kept intact and file titles have been retained.
Details of how the original consignment has been arranged have been outlined for each series in the relevant series scope and content note.
A further consignment was added in 2010.
Biographical Note
Richard Meale was born in Sydney on 24 August 1932. Between 1946 and 1955 he studied piano (under Winifred Burston), clarinet, harp, history and theory at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music, but he remained self-taught in composition. In 1960 Meale won a Ford Foundation Grant for his composition, Sonata for flute and piano. Meale used the grant to study non-Western music at the University of California in Los Angeles and concentrated on Japanese court music and Javanese and Balinese gamelan.
After visiting Europe in 1961, Meale joined the Music Department of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and developed special programs of Asian and contemporary music. He remained at the ABC until 1968.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Meale's music gained considerable interest. In 1965 Homage to Garcia Lorca was performed at the Commonwealth Arts Festival in the Royal Festival Hall, London, by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under Dean Dixon. In the same year, Meale was solo pianist in the first Australian performance of Messiaen's Oiseaux exotiques in Sydney. With such works as Nocturnes (1967), Very high kings (1968), Clouds now and then (1969), Soon it will die (1969), Interiors/exteriors (1970), Coruscations (1971), Incredible floridas (1971), Evocations (1973) and String quartet (1975), Meale achieved international recognition and was represented at festivals, including the Warsaw Autumn Festival and the Paris Rostrum, as well as being frequently broadcast on European radio.
In 1969 Meale took up an appointment as Lecturer/Teacher at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide, where he was a reader in Composition until 1988.
By 1979, Meale had completed Viridian and began work on his first opera, Voss. Voss, based on the novel by Patrick White, premiered in Adelaide in 1986 by the Australian Opera and had subsequent performances in repertoire in Sydney (1986, 1990) and Melbourne (1987).
Meale was awarded an Australian Creative Fellowship in 1989 and in 1991 his second opera, Mer de Glace, premiered in Sydney by the Australian Opera. Like Voss, the libretto for Mer de Glace was by David Malouf. Later works included Melisande for solo flute which premiered in 1996, and in 2002 his Three Miro pieces was performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
In 1985 Meale was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to music. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the Australian National University in 1996, and in 2000 was conferred Doctor of Letters honoris causa by the University of New England.

Series 1. Correspondence, c.1951-2004
Contains letters and cards, photographs, press cuttings and ephemera. There is a wide range of correspondence, but most is brief or business-like.

Series 3. Music manuscripts, c.1945-c.2002
Meale's music manuscripts including full manuscript orchestral scores, incomplete orchestral scores, orchestral parts, sketches, vocal scores and drafts written by Meale. This series has been arranged chronologically, with the dates broadly representing when the works were written. The archivist decided on this arrangement, as it appears that Meale himself started to arrange his music chronologically, housing the music in envelopes and assigning a running number.
Different items relating to the same work have generally been housed together, and for some titles there are several copies or versions per work. As much as possible, descriptions of each of the works have been included. File titles have, for the most part, been retained.
Some music has not been dated. These undated manuscripts have been grouped together at the end of this list and are in alphabetical order. Several of the folders in this series have been titled 'Miscellaneous jottings' and the titles of these, together with their contents, have been retained. Approximately nine music manuscript pieces were not titled, dated or were not able to be identified. These have been placed together in a file and have been titled 'Unidentified pieces' by the archivist.
Two of the largest components of this series relate to the two operas composed by Meale - Voss (1986) and Mer de Glace (1991). For both operas, the files were arranged into scene order as much as possible. Unidentified pieces or papers that did not appear to have been sorted or did not have any particular order, have been kept and titled as such towards the end of the list. The last five files for Mer de Glace have been listed and kept in the order that they arrived. These files were considered by the archivist to be an array of fragments, drafts and photocopies of music that did not have any discernible order.
Published versions of these manuscripts may be found in Series 12, 'Published music'. Associated documentation for these is in Series 4, 'Papers documenting Meale's compositions'.

This series relates to Richard Meale's role as a Director on the board of the Australasian Performing Right Association Ltd (APRA). The series comprises papers collected by Meale in this role, including agenda, minutes, business plans, memoranda, annual reports, correspondence and financial reports.
The papers arrived to the Library in three manila folders and as a large bundle of loose papers. The contents of the three manila folders have been maintained, and where titles have been given, these too have been retained. The bundle of loose papers did not appear to have any order, and this arrangement was maintained by the Archivist, who divided the bundle into archival folders and titled the same.
The folder, 'APRA publications', was foldered and titled by the Archivist as these publications were found later in the processing of the collection. Please note that other APRA publications can be found throughout this series.
Series 11. Music by students and contemporaries, c.1971-1998
Music by contemporaries of Meale, including his students. Works are arranged by composer or by title if the composer is not evident. Some works are manuscript, others are printed or published. Some are annotated.

Series 12. Published music, c.1903-c.1989
Published music used and collected by Meale. The series has been divided into four subseries - piano sheet music used by Meale; other sheet music; published scores and other music publications.
There did not appear to be any particular order for this series, so each subseries has been arranged by the archivist into alphabetical order by composer.
Please note that the dates given below are the publication dates of the pieces.
Subseries 12_1. Piano music used by Meale as a student, c.1903-1975
This subseries consists of piano sheet music which appears to have been used by Meale when he was a student of Winifred Burston at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Of particular note is folder 12 containing music by Martinu. On one piece of music, Meale has attached a 2004 handwritten note which explains where he played the piece.
Many of the sheets of music have been annotated (presumably by Meale) and many pieces have his name handwritten on them.
This series has been arranged by the Archivist in alphabetical order by composer.
Subseries 12_2. Other piano music, c.1950-c.1980
This group of music was owned and probably played by Meale. However, it is a less distinct group than the music in Subseries 12.1, played under Winifred Burston.
Arranged alphabetically by composer.
Subseries 12_3. Miniature and study scores, c.1950-c.1980
This subseries is arranged alphabetically by composer.
JS Bach, Henry Barraud, Bela Bartok, Luciano Berio, Ludwig van Beethoven, Alban Berg, c.1950-c.1980 (File 1)
Hector Berlioz, Arthur Bliss, Pierre Boulez, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, c.1950-c.1980 (File 3)
Aaron Copland, Claude Debussy, Frederick Delius, Gottfried von Einem, Jean-Claude Eloy, Gabriel Faure, Eugene Goossens, FJ Haydn, Paul Hindemith, Zoltan Kodaly, c.1950-c.1980 (File 4)
Subseries 12_4. Other music publications, 1927-1989
This subseries has also been arranged in alphabetical order by composer.
Series 13. Ephemera, c.1949-2003
Mostly programs of the theatre, ballet, orchestras and operas in which Meale either was the composer or played as a musician - including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Australia, the Adelaide Festival, ABC Concert Series, the Australian Opera and the Sydney Dance Company. The series includes other ephemeral items such as tickets, flyers and invitations.
Most of the ephemera was loose and in no particular order. The archivist imposed the order on the loose ephemera by sorting the material into decades. For the few pieces not dated, a folder named the same was created.
Folders 11-14 in this series appear to have been collated by Meale, and staff have retained the order of the contents of these files, although have imposed their own titles.
Please note that this series does include some newspaper cuttings and articles on Meale. Further newspaper cuttings are in Series 14 'Newspaper cuttings'.
Ephemera, c.1965-1981 (File 11_12)
This file was titled by the archivist and was originally one large file.
Series 14. Newspaper cuttings, 1952-2003
The majority of cuttings in this series relate to works by Meale, or performances by him (as conductor). Some folders also include ephemera, publications, correspondence and reviews and articles on Voss.
All folders in this series, with the exception of folders 25-26, 30, 34 and 38, have been retained in the same groupings in which they were received. Folders 25-26, 30, 34 and 38 were found in other parts of the collection and were inserted into the chronological arrangement at a later date. Some of the existing folders were in small boxes, some were co-located in piles, and some were in manila folders. In some cases it was not clear whether cuttings had been grouped by Richard Meale, or by the Curator of Music at the time of packing the records.
Folders 1-14 comprise cuttings dating from the 1950s and 1960s which were kept in a series of labelled and numbered envelopes, either by Richard Meale or possibly his mother. Existing labels have been transcribed as the titles for these folders, and the original numbering has been indicated in the description for the folder. These folders also contain brief handwritten labels grouping cuttings on a particular subject.
For some of the folders, the original file title is mentioned in the notes, with the archivist preferring to give the folders a generic title.
Cuttings, 1960 (File 2)
Labelled 1960 only. Original envelope has been disposed of due to insect damage.

Cuttings, 1965-1968 (File 31_33)
Originally in one pile together. Incudes handwritten labels eg 'Miscellaneous 1968', similar to folders 1-14. Possibly kept by Meale's mother. Multiple copies of many cuttings.
Series 15. Publications, c.1939-2002
This series contains monographs and serials collected by Meale. Most of the serials appear to be collected by Meale either because they contain articles about him or because they are of interest to him, for example, music journals
The monographs (which are in the first two boxes of this series) are either about topics of interest to Meale or are gifts. Of particular note is the book The Water-Babies(1939) which contains a birthday note to Meale from his parents. Another book, The Memoirs of Berlioz, has a handwritten note which is addressed to Patrick -presumably Patrick White -and appears to be written by David Malouf
The series as been arranged by the archivist into monographs and serials by decades. In instances where there are more than one issue of the same journal, these have been placed together.
