Biographical / Historical
Dharmasoka Laksiri Jayasuriya was born in Sri Lanka on 27 October 1931. He was educated at the Royal College in Colombo and the Universities of Ceylon, Sydney and London, where he gained his doctorate. He taught at the University of Ceylon from 1956 until 1969, when he became Professor of Sociology and Social Welfare at the University of Colombo. He returned to Australia in 1971 as the Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Western Australia. In 1974 he became Professor of Social Work and Social Administration, a position he held until 1992. He was also Director of the Centre for Asian Studies.
Professor Jayasuriya has been a member of several government advisory committees and public inquiries. He was a member of the Commonwealth Immigration Advisory Council (1972-75), the Migrant Task Force Committee (Western Australia), the Australian Council of Social Services (1975-77), the National Advisory and Co-ordinating Committee on Multicultural Education (1984-87), the Western Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission and the National Multicultural Advisory Council (1997-98). He was a Vice-President of the Western Australian Council of Social Service and was on the board of Governors of the Australian Council of Social Services. He was also President of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia, West Australians for Racial Equality and the Perth Asian Community Centre.
His publications include Social policy in the1980s (1983), Issues of cross cultural practice (1990), The changing face of Sri Lankan politics (1994), Immigration and multiculturalism in Australia (1997), Racism, immigration and the law (1999), The Asianisation of Australia? Some facts about the myths (1999) and Welfarism and politics in Sri Lanka (2000).
Professor Jayasuriya was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1985.

Class MS 9642. Original consignment, 1949-1992
This consignment comprises reprints and photocopies of articles, conference papers, government reports, legislation, ministerial statements and statistical publications.
There is also some correspondence, minutes, agenda papers and notes. The most substantial group of archival records relate to the National Advisory and Co-ordinating Committee on Multicultural Education, which Jayasuriya chaired in 1984-87 (boxes 17-22).

Jayasuriya was a member of the panel.
