Fix this textHERMITAGE CASTLE GAUNTLY GUARDS ITS GRIM HISTORY
Fix this texthermitage Castle, situated on the Hermitage Water, are in
Fix this textr es , e > Roxburghshire, Scotland, where Dandie Dinmont, in Scott’s
Fix this textuuy Mannering, was a farmer. The origin of the name Hermitage is reputed
Fix this texto be due to the fact that a cell was established here by a hermit and the
Fix this textremains of his chapel are still visible today. The site of the castle was
Fix this textexceedingly strong, being defended on one side by the river and, on the other
Fix this texttnree, by a deep morass which could be flooded in time of need. Above
Fix this texttne mam entrance, holes were provided for pouring down stones and other

Fix this textAlthough the fortress was founded by Walter Comyn, the surrounding
Fix this texth m belonged to the powerful barons of Soulis who later captured and
Fix this textneid the castle until they fell into disfavour, whereupon the castle passed into
Fix this textrne possession of Sir John Grahame, Lord of Abercorn. The heiress of this
Fix this textDar °n conveyed the castle and estates to her husband, William Douglas, known
Fix this textas the Black Knight of Liddesdale, and who rose to high distinction during the
Fix this textreign of David 11 of Scotland, and the castle became his principal stronghold,
Fix this textthe fortress was captured by the English but was later re-taken by Douglas.
Fix this textIn later years, Hermitage Castle was the scene of a brutal murder when
Fix this textSir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie was seized at Hawick by Douglas and
Fix this textcarried off to remote Hermitage where he was thrown into a dungeon with his
Fix this texthorse and left to die. The unfortunate prisoner prolonged his existence for
Fix this texta period by eating the few grains of corn which fell from a granary above
Fix this textthe vault in which he was confined. In the eighteenth century, when excavations
Fix this textwere being carried out, this dungeon was uncovered and revealed a human
Fix this textskeleton, a quantity of chaff and the bones of a horse with an ancient .bridle
Fix this textwhich would seem to verify the truth of this dark deed; one of many which
Fix this texttook place at Hermitage Castle. Little wonder, therefore, that the castle ruins
Fix this texthave the reputation of being haunted by the spirits of those who suffered within
Fix this textits walls.
Fix this textHermitage Castle came into the possession of James, Earl of Both-
Fix this textell, who was visited there by Mary Queen of Scots, and it is recorded
Fix this textthat her carriage on one occasion became stuck fast in the morass beneath
Fix this textthe walls of the stronghold, and thereafter that particular spot was called
Fix this textthe “Queen’s Mire.”
