Fix this textTREASURY OF MEDIEVAL BRITAIN, COTEHELE HOUSE
Fix this textHIGH above the Cornish bank of the River Tamar, six miles south-west
Fix this textof Tavistock, stands the grey granite mansion of Cotehele —one of the
Fix this textbest-preserved baronial manors of medieval days in Britain.
Fix this textThe passage of time has left few marks on this historic house which was
Fix this textoriginally the country seat of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe. In the
Fix this textreign of Edward 111 (1327-1377) Hiiaria de Cotehele married William de
Fix this textEdgcumbe. His great-grandson, Sir Richard Edgcumbe, built most of the
Fix this textmanor buildings as they exist today, and in essentials Cotehele remains
Fix this textmuch as it was during the period 1485-1539 in the reign of Henry VII. For
Fix this textnearly six hundred years the family held the property and they made every
Fix this texteffort to preserve, not only the medieval structure, but also the historic
Fix this textcontents of this beautiful home.
Fix this textIn 1944, when the 6th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe succeeded to the family
Fix this textestates, he suggested that Cotehele and its 1300 acres should be accepted in
Fix this textpart payment of death duties. It was received by the Treasury in 1947,
Fix this textthe first to be taken over in this way, and it passed into the care of the
Fix this textNational Trust and is now open to the public.
Fix this textIn the richly tapestry-hung chambers can be seen a superb collection
Fix this textof period furniture. The walls of the old Drawing Room arc adorned
Fix this textwith a Brussels Tapestry illustrating the history of man. A massive refectory
Fix this texttable stands on the rough stone floor of the Great Hall which has a
Fix this textremarkably fine timber roof. On the walls hang trophies of war and of
Fix this textthe chase; they include battle-axes, armour, gauntlets, matchlocks, pistols,
Fix this textspears, swords, halberds, pikes and daggers. Some of the weapons were
Fix this textused at the Battle of Agincourt and at Bosworth and other famous battles.
Fix this textAmong the exhibits can be seen a massive two-handed sword which belonged
Fix this textto the Black Prince.
Fix this textMany Royal visitors were entertained at Cotehele during its long history
Fix this textand they include Charles I, George 111, Queen Charlotte and Queen Anne.
Fix this textHeraldic panels in the windows bear the arms of the Edgcumbe family and
Fix this textof those with whom they have been associated in marriage. The grandfather
Fix this textof Sir Walter Raleigh was a distinguished member.
